Unexpected Cliches
I feel the Clarification of this base rule is crucial. Many ‘realistic’ supplements remove inappropriate clichés entirely. This should not be the case for adventures set in these supplements.
As Will Douglas said, on the risus mailing list, “Creativity. Exactly. This is what the Inappropriate Cliché rule is for. If standing toe-to-toe with the bad guy and hacking on him does not work, then you have to get creative. You have to come up with an alternate strategy. You have to do something he does not expect. Another way to think of "Inappropriate" clichés is "Unexpected" clichés. The effect is magnified (three dice instead of one) because the attack was so unexpected. It is not that the attack is any more deadly; often it's less. But the sudden shock, the paradigm shift, messes up your opponent much worse than just stabbing/ shooting/ clobbering him would.” - thanks Will.
So Instead of removing the rule, inappropriate clichés that fit the genre and are common to the setting should be encouraged. Clichés that do not fit the genre, the setting, or the theme of the party members should not be considered by the GM. Doing something creative and inappropriate (Unexpected) by a ‘Bar Wench (3)’ when fighting a ‘Large Hairy Mountain Troll (4)’ is conceivable within the context of the game and is unexpected, so encouraged. After all, is handling a Mountain Troll much different from a ‘Drunken Barbarian (4)’ on a Friday night after one too many types of ales at the inn? However, ‘Hairdresser (3)’ is not really fitting to a Fantasy genre, setting, or theme - so should be addressed accordingly. The individual GM should have the final say on any such clichés.
